Interceptive Orthodontics

Just a few years ago, the standard of care for orthodontics was to wait until early adolescence to treat issues related to crooked teeth and poor jaw alignment. Things have changed and Dr. Ramsey collaborates with reputed orthodontists in order to understand and address potential problems just as children are getting their permanent teeth. This approach, referred to as interceptive orthodontics, can reduce or even eliminate the time your child spends in full braces later. Postponing orthodontic treatment can also result in tooth extractions and more invasive procedures.

Dr. Ramsey recommends that the first orthodontic exam occurs when your child is 6 or 7 years old. By then, your child has enough permanent teeth to create a full picture for her and the orthodontist. They will be able to identify potential issues and provide answers.

Interceptive orthodontics, also referred to as phase I orthodontics, begins when a child is somewhere between 7 and 11 years of age. It can correct complications that occur from bad bites and jaw problems that could later result in malalignment of the teeth.

Space Maintainers and Expanders

If Dr. Ramsey determines crowding is going to be a problem in years to come, she might recommend the use of appliances like expanders. Expanders can sometimes be used to help create enough space prior to the emergence of all the permanent teeth or to correct crossbites. Space maintainers are also a great solution when baby teeth are lost early due to injuries or cavities. They can help prevent shifting and drifting of teeth and could make later treatment with braces less complicated.
